Leisure
Biggar is a picturesque country town which stands on the A702 trunk road connecting the city of Edinburgh with the M74 main England / Scotland motorway.
Its long, colourful and often turbulent past has provided a legacy of many sites of historical interests, several museums and other leisure attractions based on bygone times. Among these are:
Gladstone Court, where a Victorian Street with small shops is recreated.
The Albion Museum houses vehicles and archives of Albion Motors, a commercial vehicle manufacturing firm established in 1899 with a bond on a local farm.
The John Buchanan Centre houses a display commemorating the life and works of the poet, statesman and writer.
Brownsbank Cottage, the home from 1957 until his death in 1978, of Scotland’s international poet, Hugh MacDiarmid.
Biggar Gasworks Museum preserved just as it was when it closed in 1973 following the arrival of North Sea Gas.
New Lanark Heritage Centre (30 mins) surrounded by beautiful native woodland and close to the falls of the Clyde, the 200 year old cotton mill of New Lanark has been saved for future generations as a living community and lasting monument to Robert Owen, mill owner and social pioneer.
Traquair House (30 mins) This amazing mansion is beyond Peebles down the River Tweed. It is Scotland's oldest inhabited house and has its own famous little brewery.
